FIG. P / Plumber-led local search
Plumbing is the textbook case for Local SEO
Plumbing is one of the most search-driven trades in the UK. When something goes wrong — a leak, a burst pipe, a dead boiler in February — the customer behaviour is identical: out comes the phone, "emergency plumber [town]" goes into Google, and they tap the first result with reviews and a working phone number.
If your business isn't in the top three, you don't get the call. There's no second chance and no email follow-up — the customer has phoned the next plumber and moved on within ninety seconds. The cost of being invisible at that moment is not a missed click; it's a missed £400 boiler job.
Local SEO for plumbers is, at its core, about being the obvious choice at exactly the moment a stranger needs help right now.
How plumbers customers actually search.
| Keyword | Intent | Monthly volume (UK) |
|---|---|---|
| emergency plumber [town] | Emergency · ready to call now | 1,000–9,000/mo |
| boiler repair [town] | Repair · same-day intent | 500–4,000/mo |
| boiler installation [town] | Install · 1–2 week decision | 300–2,500/mo |
| gas engineer near me | General · ready to call | 5,000–10,000/mo |
| bathroom fitter [town] | Project · 4–8 week decision | 200–1,500/mo |
| leak repair [town] | Emergency · same-day | 150–1,200/mo |
| blocked drain [town] | Emergency · same-day | 300–2,000/mo |
Volumes are approximate UK ranges — actual local volume varies by service area.
Generic agencies treat plumbers like accountants
We've taken on plenty of plumber clients who'd been with a generic SEO agency for 12+ months. Same story every time: lots of "branded keyword rankings" in the report, a slow website, a half-built Google Business Profile, and almost no leads.
Plumbers don't need to rank for vanity terms. They need to rank for emergency intent, in their service area, on mobile, with reviews and a click-to-call within two thumb-strokes. That's a completely different optimisation problem from ranking a B2B SaaS site or a local accountant.
We focus on three things: a properly built service-area page architecture (Loughborough, Melton, Ashby — each individually ranked), an aggressively optimised Google Business Profile with a real review-velocity strategy, and an emergency-keyword targeting model that out-ranks the generic city-centre plumbers in the surrounding villages.
Rank in every village you actually cover
Most plumber websites have one "Areas We Cover" page with a list of towns. That's not a service-area architecture — that's a placeholder. Google won't rank a list page for individual town searches.
We build genuine service-area pages — one per town in your service area. Each one has unique content about your work in that specific town, embedded local proof (real jobs, real photos, real postcodes mentioned where relevant), and proper local schema. The result: a single plumbing business covering an entire county on the first page of Google for the towns that actually matter.
If you currently get most of your work in one town, this is the single biggest unlock available — far cheaper than paid ads, and it compounds for years.
How plumbers actually win the review game
Plumber reviews compound. Each fresh five-star review on Google does three things: it lifts your map-pack rank, it earns you the next click against a competitor, and it builds a moat that takes years for anyone to replicate.
The mistake most plumbers make is asking inconsistently — "if you've got time, leave a review" at the end of a job — and then forgetting. Conversion rate on that approach is around 5–10%. We replace it with a simple, automated, two-touch system that runs in the background and gets you to 30–50% conversion without any extra work from you.
Crucially, our review request system is designed to get past Google's spam filter. Many "review request" tools used by plumbers actually trigger filtering — meaning the customer leaves a great review and Google quietly hides it. We engineer around that.

Will this work for emergency plumbing as well as planned work?
Yes. We deliberately build separate ranking architectures for emergency intent (out-of-hours, 24-hour, leak, burst) and planned intent (boiler installation, bathroom fit, refurb). They have different keyword profiles and different conversion patterns, so we optimise for both separately.
I cover 15+ towns. Can you really rank me in all of them?
Yes — that's exactly what service-area page architecture is designed for. Realistically, the first 6–8 towns rank fastest; the longer tail follows over months 4–9. By month 12 most of our plumber clients are visible across their full service area for the high-intent searches.
Do I need to be Gas Safe registered?
If you're advertising any gas work, yes — both for legal compliance and because Google's category structure expects it. We make sure your Gas Safe number is featured correctly across your profile, your website, and your structured data.
What if I don't have many photos?
We can start with what you have. Long-term, the best-performing plumber sites all share a steady stream of real job photos — even simple before/after shots from a few jobs a week. We'll show you exactly what to capture and how.
Should I run Google Ads as well?
For some emergency keywords in highly competitive cities (Birmingham, Manchester, big-suburb London), paid ads can sit above the map pack and capture some of the highest-intent calls. We'll discuss this as a separate scope and tell you honestly whether it's worth running.
