FIG. B / Builder local search
Builders sell on credibility, not price
Building work is the highest-ticket trade we work with. A single extension is a £40–80k project; a full renovation easily £150k+. The customer is making a six-figure decision, often the largest non-house spend of their lives, and they're not picking the cheapest quote.
What they are picking is the builder who looks the most credible online: a portfolio of finished work that resembles their project, structured information about the process, real reviews from real local addresses, and a website that doesn't make them flinch.
Most builder websites we audit fail this credibility test in the first ten seconds. A confused homepage, a portfolio of three random photos, no reviews, no process, no schema. We fix that.
How builders customers actually search.
| Keyword | Intent | Monthly volume (UK) |
|---|---|---|
| builders [town] | General · multiple stages | 1,500–9,000/mo |
| house extension [town] | Project · 4–12 weeks | 300–2,500/mo |
| loft conversion cost [town] | Research · 1–4 months | 200–1,500/mo |
| kitchen extension builder | Project · 4–12 weeks | 150–1,000/mo |
| renovation builder near me | Project · 1–6 months | 200–1,500/mo |
| new build construction company | B2B · 6+ months | 100–600/mo |
Volumes are approximate UK ranges — actual local volume varies by service area.
From "loft conversion cost" to a phone call takes weeks
Unlike emergency plumbing, building searches are not a single moment of intent. The journey starts months before any builder is contacted: "loft conversion cost", "two-storey extension planning permission", "do I need an architect". By the time the customer searches "loft conversion builder [town]", they've consumed five hours of content from someone — and that someone has a head start on the job.
We build content for every stage of that journey: cost guides, process explainers, planning-permission FAQs, project timelines, before-and-after case studies. Each piece feeds your SEO authority and pre-sells your business to the customer who eventually does pick up the phone.
It's slower work than emergency-trade SEO, but the lead value is 10–50× higher and the long-term moat is much harder to displace.
The single highest-leverage asset for builder SEO
Every finished project is a content asset. We build proper project case-study pages — one per significant build — with the brief, the design choices, the timeline, the photos and ideally a short owner testimonial. Each case study targets a specific intent ("side extension Loughborough", "full renovation Melton Mowbray") and acts as a ranking page in its own right.
Twenty case studies in, you have a portfolio that ranks for twenty long-tail commercial keywords and sells the next customer before you even speak to them. This is the single highest-leverage asset in builder SEO.
We help structure the photo capture, write the case-study content, and build it into your site as a properly scalable architecture rather than a flat gallery.
FMB / FCA membership, real reviews, real addresses
Customers about to spend £80k will check three things before calling: are you in a trade body (FMB, FCA, NHBC), are your reviews real, and have you done work in their part of town. We make sure all three are visible inside the first scroll on every key page.
Reviews matter twice for builders: they signal quality to Google's local algorithm, and they signal credibility to the customer who's an inch from making a six-figure call. We build a review pipeline that asks at the right moment in the project (handover, not the day after) and gets you to a rate that out-strips your competitors.

Questions builders ask first.

How long until I see project enquiries?
Larger-ticket project work has a longer search-to-call lag than emergency trades. Most builder clients see meaningful enquiry uplift in months 3–4, with the strongest growth in months 6–12 as case studies and content compound.
Will this work for new-build construction as well as renovation?
Yes. We split the architecture: a renovation/extension cluster for homeowner search, and a new-build / commercial cluster for B2B search. The content, keywords and trust signals are different, and we build for both.
Do I need professional photography for case studies?
Helpful, not essential. The first batch of case studies can be built from competent phone photos — most modern phones capture more than enough resolution. As you grow, professional photography pays for itself many times over per case study.
What about Houzz, Checkatrade and MyBuilder?
These platforms generate referrals but build no equity for your business — they own the relationship and rent it back to you. We integrate review feeds where useful, and use the platforms tactically, but the long-term goal is to make your own site the strongest asset in your marketing.
Can you help with planning-permission and architect content?
Absolutely. Educational content (planning permission timelines, party-wall agreements, building regulations) ranks well, builds authority, and pre-sells your expertise. We plan and write this as part of the engagement.
