Why Those Three Google Listings Decide Who Gets the Job

Kieran Gascoyne 19 Aug 2026 6 min read

Search for almost any local service on a phone and look at what fills the screen. Not websites — three business listings with star ratings, photos and a call button, sitting above everything else. That's the Map Pack, and for a large share of local searches it is the only thing the person ever engages with.

Three slots, three comparisons

BrightLocal's 2026 Consumer Search Behavior Report found that 72% of consumers compare three businesses or fewer before choosing one. Only 1% look at more than ten.

Google shows three. Most people consider three. If you are not one of them, you are not being rejected — you are simply never being considered.

And they decide fast

The same research found 75% of people choose a business within 30 minutes of starting to look, and 28% decide in under five. Trades and home repair are among the slower categories, and even there 90% of decisions are made inside an hour.

There is no later. Being findable next week is the same as not being findable.

What actually moves you into those three positions

  • Categories. Your primary category is the single biggest lever, and it's the thing most profiles get wrong — often describing what the business calls itself rather than what customers search for.
  • Proximity and coverage area. You can't move your business, but you can make sure Google understands the whole area you serve.
  • Reviews. Volume, rating and recency are all direct ranking signals, and 97% of consumers read them before choosing anyway. This is the rare thing that helps you rank and helps you convert.
  • Activity. A profile with recent posts, current photos and answered questions reads as a live business. A dormant one reads as a maybe.
  • Completeness. Services listed individually, each with its own description. It's free space almost nobody fills in.

It is not advertising

This is the part worth being clear about. Map Pack visibility isn't bought per click. It compounds — a profile worked on consistently gets stronger month after month, and keeps producing enquiries at no additional cost per lead. It also decays if abandoned, which is why it's a habit rather than a project.

If your profile has never been properly set up, that's the highest-return few hours available to a local business right now. If it has, the work is keeping it alive.
