For twenty years, winning at search meant one thing: appear high enough in a list of blue links that somebody clicks yours. That model is quietly coming apart. Ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode or Gemini for a plumber in your town and you don't get a list — you get an answer, written in prose, naming two or three businesses, with the actual search results pushed somewhere below it.
If your business is not in that answer, you are not in the running. It doesn't matter that you rank fourth organically, because the person asking never scrolled that far.
This is not a small trend
BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools to find local businesses — up from 6% the year before. Among people who use them, 64% say they trust an AI recommendation as much as they trust reviews.
A sevenfold jump in a single year is not a niche behaviour settling in. It's a change in how people find local businesses, happening now, while most small business websites are still built entirely for the previous model.
So what is AEO, practically?
Answer Engine Optimisation is the work of making your business easy for a language model to quote confidently. That comes down to a handful of unglamorous things:
- Content that answers a specific question in a self-contained way, rather than burying the answer in a paragraph of preamble
- Structured data that states unambiguously what you do, where you do it, when you're open and how to reach you
- Consistent facts across your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory that lists you — models notice contradictions and get cautious
- Pages that render as real HTML rather than assembling themselves in the browser, because a crawler that sees an empty page cites nothing
- Genuine specificity: the towns you actually cover, the jobs you actually do, in the words customers actually use
An AI assistant will not guess in your favour. It cites what it can verify — so the job is making yourself verifiable.
The overlap with good SEO is large, but not total
Most AEO work is things a well-built site should be doing anyway. The difference is emphasis. Traditional SEO rewards a page that's comprehensive enough to keep somebody reading. AEO rewards a page that answers the question cleanly enough to be lifted out and attributed. You want both, and they don't conflict — but if your site was built to a 2019 SEO playbook, it will be doing the first and not the second.
Where to start
Check what an AI assistant currently says when asked to recommend a business like yours in your area. If you're not mentioned, that's your baseline. Then fix the boring things first — structured data, consistent details, real answers to real questions — because those are what move it.
We build AEO structure into every site as standard, and it's one of the things we check on a free website audit. If you want to know where you stand before spending anything, that's the place to begin.
